Portrait of Poet Hodasevich
5' by 3' Oil and mixed media on canvas
Hodasevich was a famous Russian poet, this is a painting of him with his muse. The samovar here represents warmth and family happiness, around which everyone is gathered. We’re hoping that this will inspire poetic success. The poet is sitting in a boat, floating on the water. The boat and water represents freedom from the restrictions you find on land, and a loss of time as when on the water your sense of time is only controlled by the sun rising and falling. This famous poet’s creativity was exemplified when describing the contrasts between Russia and the Soviet Union, however the comparisons were not allowed to be published – the poems traveled through back channels between close friends. This is one of the first paintings which has actual letters on it. The letters spell out the poet’s name.
